Capt de Greybagges is not your typical pirate. After all, something really strange happened to him. Now if he is to get his ladylove back and get his revenge, he has to gather the best pirate crew of all time. The characters are thoroughly typical on first look, but are nicely developed by the end.

If you enjoyed "The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists!" (or the movie done by Aardman Animations inspired by the book, or the many others in that series) you'll probably get a kick out of this novel.

That said, I found myself forcing myself to read it at times: I don't know if it's the denser prose (yup, intellectual pirates) or what, but I'd enjoy myself through a few scenes and then put the book down for days.

I was an early reviewer for this book, and I'm thrilled because I might never have found it otherwise. It's not perfect, but an enjoyable read if you aren't too hung up on accuracy, physics, or a lawyer.

The mixture of pirates and aliens is what attracted me to the book in the first place, and the wordplay that sets up the accidental encounter with Martians is good enough that I won't reproduce it here as a spoiler. Wordplay is a major component of this book; the pirates are given to philosophical musing about life, the universe, and everything. That said, some of the jokes fall flat ("Lulu Cthulhu"? Really?) and the inclusion of some historical figures (including Cthulhu) doesn't quite work smoothly. The 1/2 star I gave to the book was mostly for the rather flat portrayal of women. Which, to be fair, is tough in a period pirate novel, although if you are going to have time travel and aliens, I think you should also be able to work out a way to have female characters that aren't crabby and bossy all the time.

If you can silence your inner voice that says "That wouldn't ever happen!" and "That's not how physics works!!", this is an entertaining read with lots of pirate lingo. ARRRR.

As an aside, this book had the nicest Early Reviewer package I've ever recieved-- along with the book, I got a hand written note from the publisher, and a detailed interview with the author. Well done, Exterminating Angel Press.

I won this book in exchange for an honest review.

In Greenbeard, Richard Bentley combines two beloved genres, pirates and aliens. The element of revenge is the glue that keeps the two together.

Captain Sylvestre de Greybagges is out for revenge and a great treasure haul after aliens kidnap him and enslave him for 3 years. A very novel concept however, I think it didn't quite make its' mark.

What I liked:
-The idea of Captain de Greybagges originally being a lawyer who then turns to piracy because it's pretty much the same profession.
-Pirate lingo.
-Nautical and life at sea descriptions.
-The words banyan and boucan (damn yer eyes!)
-The characters were all delightful. They were quite endearing in how they camouflaged their education by speaking in pirate talk and would try to cover up when they did lapse into proper English.
-Prose was quite deep at times and very philosophical.
-Good dialogue.

What I didn't like:
-Anticlimatic ending. 98% of the book was spent on the process of preparing for revenge with the last 2% spent on the actual revenge.
-Many type-o's and grammatical errors.
-Lack of details. How did the Captain learn about Frank Benjamin, and more importantly, how to build a space ship.
-What's with the creature's head on the cover?

I do give the author credit for trying to intertwine the two genres but the story needed more balance.
