Petr Beckmann

Il pi greco è un numero sfuggente ancorché ubiquo. Sono tanti i libri che parlano di esso; però in questo caso devo dire che ci troviamo davanti a uno stranissimo miscuglio. Il testo è pieno di formule e derivazioni matematiche, quindi parrebbe più adatto per un matematico; ma Beckmann mette subito le cose in chiaro, e afferma che «Poiché non sono né uno storico né un matematico, mi sento del tutto qualificato per scrivere questo racconto». E in effetti il testo è inframmezzato di commenti per nulla sfumati contro tutto quello che non gli piace, dagli antichi romani ai cristiani, dai nazisti ai comunisti sovietici (Beckmann è di origine ceca, la sua famiglia emigrò in Gran Bretagna per sfuggire ai nazisti, rientrarono in patria dopo la guerra ma nel 1963 Beckmann defezionò verso gli USA). Questo può rendere meno indigesta la lettura a chi non mastica matematica e vuole solo avere un'idea della storia dietro il numero. La prima edizione del libro è del 1971 (anche se la versione in ebook è del 2014), pertanto non ci sono gli ultimi risultati ottenuti dai computer; ma tanto Beckmann li considerava di poco interesse, visto che sono solo conti... Chissà se però avrebbe apprezzato l'algoritmo che calcola una specifica cifra decimale di π senza ricavare prima le altre!… (mais)

This a well written book that sits at the edge of math and history. Its genius is in the tone. Mr Beckmann is an opinionated fellow (don't ask him for his thoughts on the United Nations), but his arguments are intelligent, well put together, and easy to understand.

As for the math, I understood the first half. The second half I usually got the concepts, but the actual math was beyond me. The illustrations of the principals were actually useful and placed in a spot that fit the narrative.

I also was very impressed that he he didn't neglect what was happening in Asia- for the time it was written (1970's), it would have taken a lot of research to get this information.

One last thing, the time the book was written, computers were nowhere near what they are in today. It took about 28 hours to calculate pi to 250,000 places. I suspect the laptop I'm typing this on can do it in a few minutes. This doesn't detract from the book, but adds to the charm. It's amazing how far we've come, technology wise, in the last 50 years.… (mais)
