John Bartram (1) (1699–1777)

From the introduction by Bell: "In the fall of 1742 there occurred in the back country of Virginia one of those unpremeditated, meaningless clashes between an Iroquois hunting party and some white settlers that so often threatened or broke the peace of the North American colonies. Reared among the Iroquois of New York, a Mohawk by adoption, Weiser spoke the Indians' language, understood and observed their customs, and enjoyed their confidence. . The next summer, on behalf of the governor of Virginia, he travelled to the Council seat of the Six Nations at Onondage. On this journey he was accompanied by two acquaintances, John Bartram and Lewis Evans." This book is written in three parts: Observations by John Bartram (botanist), Extract from the Journal of Lewis Evans (surveyor), and Report of a Journey to Onondaga by Conrad Weiser.
