First Command is the first volume of Scott Bartlett’s 10-volume spacer series. Tad Thatcher is an officer in Earth’s under-equipped space fleet. He gets his first command by resigning his commission to command the New Jersey, a warship in a private navy defending colonies in Dawn Cluster. Thatcher must get an undisciplined crew in shape to fight pirates and an emerging alien threat. There is plenty of action, but this one is straight out of the Horatio Hornblower playbook.

So I finished this one rather quickly, I was sort of in a hurry to finish it so I could read something else. It was not a bad book but it just did not captivate me like I had hoped. At this point I do not plan on reading the sequels.

Supercarrier was a fun read and I really did enjoy the book. I also enjoyed that humanity wasn't some sort of benevolent force that saved the rest of the galaxy, especially when there were other races that have been galactic powers for longer. However, humanity was still ridiculously powerful.

My two biggest grips though are 1) why would most of Captain Keyes crew continue to follow him when most aren't even able to hold a friendly conversation with any of the Aliens? 2) I'm also pretty confused on the idea that forcing battle and threatening to Nuke the Winger's home world would force them to talk with the humans and negotiate.

All in all though it was a fun read, and worth picking up imo.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Bartlett has unleashed "Shattered Galaxy: The Complete After The Galaxy Boxset" audible edition upon our own galaxy.
I'll share my reviews of the constituent volumes as well as my overall impression of the boxset.
I'll be honest, boxsets are AWESOME!!!! It's like binge-watching your favourite television series on the streaming service of your choice...

First up, "The Unsung: After The Galaxy, Book 1".
Bartlett delivers a fine tale in "The Unsung: After The Galaxy Book 1" Audible edition.
We meet Joe, Dice, The Aries and Maneater in quick succession.
Joe is the point of view character, you'll find out about the others as you read.
The author does a fine job of worldbuilding and character development. Especially Joe Pikeman's character as an elite Galactic Guard Trouble Shooter. With an emphasis on the shooter part...
Q: Can Joe figure out who destroyed the server room on Sol?
Q: Can Joe discover why only the adults were killed in the Sol Brinktown?
Q: Can Joe rescue his daughter and the daughter of an influential society member?
A: Read this fine tale and find out!

NEXT UP: "Unsung Armada: After The Galaxy, Book 2"
In "Unsung Armada: After The Galaxy, Book 2" Bartlett delivers another rip roaring space opera adventure. The author continues weaving a fine tapestry of world-building and character development. Particularly Joe "The Butcher" Pikeman and the mysterious "Master" Shivan ghost.
There's plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Joe and crew venture into a new sector and Joe faces betrayal and intrigue.

Lastly: "The Crucible: After The Galaxy, Book 3".
"The Crucible: After The Galaxy, Book 3" is a wild ride up until the very end with lots of twists and turns.
The author's world building and character development is, again, top shelf. Particularly both Joe and Sorin.
Bartlett manages to walk that fine balance of action and exposition.
Q: Will Joe survive the actions of the traitor in his crew?
Q: Will Joe survive this mission?
Q: Will Bartlett tie up all the threads of this richly woven tapestry?
A: Read the book and find out!
=====
Seriously, a boxset is a wonderful thing for both the author and the readers Especially the readers. cos you get everything in one place and save a bit of money.
I "read" it via Audible, however, if you'd rather have a hard copy, or e-copy go for it, you won't regret it.
I've talked about the author, now let me talk about the talent that brought this trilogy to life.
Mark Boyett's voice is familiar to me from other books that he's narrated. Mr. Boyett does a great job of bringing Bartlett's stories to life. I've listened to audio books since I was about eight and the narrator is CRUCIAL. A great narrator can make a great story even greater. Mr. Boyett does that in this case. Having been a Talking Book patron for a few decades the highest compliment that I can bestow upon Mr. Boyett is that he is on par with Bob Askey.
In the interest of transparency, I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review.
It is my own honest opinion.
