I really liked the premise of this book—contemporary forensic specialist Dayna plying her trade in a fantasy world. However, the story didn't quite hit the spot for me, and I struggled to remain engaged. I got tired of how many times Dayna's "brain went click" and she suddenly had the solution to a problem. It feels like having the character (or story) relying on too many leaps of inspiration cheapens achievements. My other main grump was the overly coy chapter endings where some important piece of information was revealed, but not to the reader.
It was a pleasant enough read, but I don't feel inclined to read the sequels.… (mais)

Took 4 months to get to 36%. I'm done.
Sadly, this book didn't work for me. I like fantasy and I like whodunnits, and I'm happy to read cross-genre fiction but this one didn't work - it reminded me of 1980s planar travel fantasies where the characters from this world (usually D&D players) find a portal or are summoned into a fantasy world. Mike Resnick did this far better in Stalking the Unicorn. At least it was well-written enough for me to finish it, but I won't bother with the others in the series.

Was a little slow at first the main character could have had more background information and up beat attitude but that can be added to later books so the character grows. The quirky secondary characters were great. Think I will add this author to my favorite list. It is nice to see an author that does not follow the trend.
