David Rayvern Allen (1938–2014)

Huge disappointment. Anyone looking for information on Sir C. Aubrey Smith today is doing so because of his unforgettable roles in so many films of the 30's and 40's. I had thought this book would give more insight into what his co-stars thought of him. Instead the majority of the book is about his cricket playing. Yes, reading wikipedia we all know he was a cricket player but to devote the majority of this book, in such detail, to cricket was terribly difficult to read through to an American who does not understand the game, scoring, or anything about it. Even the one chapter devoted to Smith's sound film career ended up having several pages devoted to cricket. Yes, it was amazing he was still playing at an advanced age but this was not why I purchased the book. Also disappointing was there was no info on what happened to his wife and daughter after he passed away. There is no filmography or listing of his stage appearances. While there were some interesting photographs, this book is not for anyone interested in Smith's acting career.… (mais)
