Hettie the Highland cow has lots of hair to keep her warm and cosy. But other animals want to be cosy too... In springtime two blackbirds stop by and build their nest in Hettie's hair. She's a cow not a hedge! In summertime some butterflies lay their eggs in Hettie's fur, which grow into wriggling caterpillars. In Fall a squirrel burrows in to hibernate. And in winter a mountain hare hops aboard too! Poor Hettie. She's a cow, not a hairy hotel! It might be time for a haircut...

Hettie, a shaggy Highland cow who lived on Granny Macleod's farm, was always hungry. Fortunately, Callum and Kirsty loved Hettie, and took to giving her treats behind Granny's back. From porridge on Monday to cake on Saturday, they spent a week feeding her all sorts of un-bovine fare, with predictable results. Hettie felt decidedly unwell - for the first time in her life, she wasn't hungry! - and Granny was angry. Would this be the end of the children's generosity to Hettie, or was there something else they could give her, instead of food...?

The first of two picture-books featuring Hettie the Highland Cow - I happened to read the second, Hairy Hettie, first - Hungry Hettie is part of Edinburgh-based Floris Books' Picture Kelpies line, which presents picture-books written and/or illustrated by Scottish authors and artists, and featuring Scottish themes. The story here is humorous, highlighting the fact that what is good for people to eat (a debatable point really, as some of the foods mentioned are none-too healthy) is not always good for animals. The artwork is likewise appealing. As I mentioned in my review of Hairy Hettie, I'm curious to see how Jo Allan's books compare to Natalie Russell's Hamish the Highland Cow titles.

Hettie the Highland Cow finds herself playing host to a series of small creatures who seek shelter in her shaggy coat in this latest entry in Edinburgh-based Floris Books' Picture Kelpies line, set up to highlight contemporary Scottish picture-books. As a pair of blackbirds build a nest on her head, butterflies hatch from her fur, and squirrels and mountain hares burrow into her warm coat, Hettie becomes more and more uncomfortable. Finally, she appeals to her human owner, Granny Macleod, and is helped out of her difficulties...

The second picture-book from Jo Allan to feature the shaggy highland cow - the first, Hungry Hettie, is not one I have read, although I'd love to track down a copy! - Hairy Hettie is a fun little story, one that highlights a breed of cattle native to Scotland. The artwork is colorful and cute, and the story appealing. I understand there is another picture-book series about a highland cow - I'll have to track down a copy of Natalie Russell's Hamish the Highland Cow, and compare it to this one.
