Name: Friends and Five Seasons: Rupen's Early Years
Author: Madhukant Acharya
Genre: Historical Fiction, Drama, Adventure, Life
Rating: 3.5/5
Review:
Set in the 1920s Pre-independent India, Friends and Five Seasons by Madhukant Acharya is a story of growing up, friendship, and patriotism. It is a story of three friends, Rupen, Ajit, and Dinkar, their friendship, and their lives. It is a coming-of-age book that emphasizes the role of educated Indians in the fight against British rule, injustice, and oppression.
Written in the third person, this book tells the story of not only the three friends but their families, society, culture, and history. In this vividly narrated tale, the author brings to light many of the issues in Indian society which include child marriage, dowry system, zamindari system, and many more.
It is clear as day that this book is a work of a lot of research and planning. The writing style is pretty good. The author has an amazing job in drawing up a 1920s Indian society, with its vivid and descriptive narrative and world-building. I must appreciate the author's wonderful choice of vocabulary. The language is simple and easy to read.
The characters are well developed, though I did not take any particular like to any of the characters. The plot is original and supposedly engaging, though I
Had a hard time getting into the story. At the same time, I felt that the author was being sexist which writing the female characters.
Overall, I would say I did not like the plot, I could not relate to any of the characters. But I enjoyed the writing style, vocabulary, and world-building, which made this book worth reading. I would give this book 3.5/5 because I think the effort the author put into this book is much appreciable. I would like to recommend this book to history enthusiasts and to readers who enjoy reading about pre-independent India as well as historical fiction.
