You Will Know Me em Crime, Thriller & Mystery (Julho 2017)

I had bad taste in men, but then came Jed.

Jacy is pregnant when she and her husband travel to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to his father's house, an isolated rural retreat near the Wisconsin border. She's excited about the trip, about having a baby, she likes Jed's urbane father. But Jacy hadn't known about the housekeeper, whose position in the household she can't figure out. And now her husband's acting weird and he and her father-in-law's attitude towards her pregnancy seem to omit her from having any say, especially once a local gynecologist and personal friend of the family is called in for a consult.

This is a gothic suspense tale by Megan Abbott, here writing with more than a tinge of Joyce Carol Oates. This is a claustrophobic story, told from Jacy's point of view, where she's not certain of what's going on around her and her husband is either absent or just wants her to calm down. This is one of the best things Abbott has written, tying a classic genre together with very modern fears about bodily autonomy.

"You can’t understand what it’s like until you see your child do something you could never do. No one could ever do."

The world of competitive gymnastics -- reaching the pinnacle where a spot on the Olympic team is just in sight. A dream come true, right? Or, maybe, a nightmare.

Megan Abbott creates for us a world of that typical suburban family with a not-at-all typical child. Since she was little Devon Knox has had the singular drive, determination, and focus, to make her a champion. The family has done everything to support her -- re-mortgaging the house, subordinating their own ambitions, and ignoring their other child, to make Dylan's dream come true. When tragedy strikes their gymnastics community, fingers will point, people will whisper, and no one will know who to trust.

I appreciated the tension in this book, and loved author's exploration of several themes (family sacrifice for one member's goals, female gymnast's body issues, etc.) but on the whole I wasn't enthralled. The "suspense" part of the book felt a little bit confusing, and the end was anti-climactic.

3 stars

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown for a galley of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Absorbing crime story (based on a true event in 1930's LA) with definite film noir potential but I wanted it to be finished. The supporting characters lapsed into stereotype but the story kept me reading in a nightmarish swoon.
