Hawjan is a jinn who falls in love with a human girl, Sawsan; and wrestles with his own supernatural family and the forces of magic, at the same time mildly critiquing the structures of society in Saudi Arabia (though not much in so far as the status of women is concerned). The book was a huge best-seller, if controversial, in Saudi Arabia and the wider region, and apparently will be filmed soon. I must say I'm not a huge paranormal romance fan in normal times, but it was interesting to see the tropes adapted to a very different cultural setting.… (mais)

An sf novel by a Saudi writer Ibraheem Abbas. It's short and digestible, about a young man who finds himself in a Somewhere which could be a dream world, could be a virtual reality, could be time travel; it is rooted in contemporary online and gaming culture, yet also brings in certain important historical personalities (some European, one East Asian), all told in a breathless contemporary voice, full of exclamation marks. (Could have done with a little more editing for correct English.) I look forward to reading the other book I have by the same writer.… (mais)
