"This book grills up an enjoyable read for both avid foodies and novice diners alike! Perman's sneak peek into the fascinating history of In-N-Out is as good as the delicious burgers themselves." --Mario Batali, celebrity chef and author ofMolto Italiano A behind-the-counter look at the fast-food chain that breaks all the rules, Stacy Perman'sIn-N-Out Burger is the New York Times bestselling inside story of the family behind the California-based hamburger chain with a cult following large enough to rival the Grateful Dead's. A juicy unauthorized history of a small business-turned-big business titan, In-N-Out Burger was named one of Fast Company magazine's Best Business Books of 2009, and  Fortune Small Business insists that it "should be required reading for family business owners, alongside Rich Cohen's Sweet and Low and Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks."… (mais)

In-N-Out's focus on a simple, quality product, delivered by capable and motivated employees has fueled success since 1948. The book documents the industry context over the decades—from the evolution of the highway system, to the Burger Wars, to the rise of fast-casual—demonstrating how In-N-Out positioned itself for success, and did not shift in response to new trends or fads, even as family tragedy altered succession plans.

Like the gas-station convenience store chain Quik-Trip, In-N-Out's pursuit of growth was never driven by a vision of market saturation or profit maximization, but in order to create career growth opportunities for its loyal associates. Unlike other fast-food chains who rapidly expanded their footprint, In-N-Out used its management bench as a key metric in its expansion plans. As Rich Snyder said, "If you lose your workers, you lose your customers. I don't know how others do it, but we just try to keep everybody happy that works for us." In-N-Out's commitment to its employees demonstrates that it is possible to offer good restaurant jobs, without sacrificing price or quality.

The book is heavy with details, many of which are not necessarily the most interesting or poignant. Chapter 12 has the richest information on their internal training and development systems, but much of the rest of the book covers the family, their lifestyle, and the context of the time. ( )

Love the restaurant. The book is so-so.

The book lacked the warmth of the restaurants. It's understandable because In N out refused to give an interview to the author. It just read more like a history book out of school.

A book that examines the history of California's beloved In-N-Out Burger. Perman needs to piece the story from the public record and interviews with former employees and competitors. In-N-Out is a very private company and did not participate in interviews with the major players. If you love In-N-Out and want to know about how they became a cult classic then this a book for you.
