“8 Goths [Swedes] and 22 Norwegians on exploration-journey from Vinland through the West. We camped by 2 lake islands one day north od this stone. We went fishing one day. When we came home found 10 men red with blood and dead. AC. M. Save us from evil. 10 men by sea to look after our ships 14 days journey from this island. Year 1362.” This is the inscription on the Kensington Stone found in 1898 in Kensington, Minnesota. Is it genuine, the unique record of a forgotten expedition to America? Or is it one of the most successful hoaxes in history? Scholarship has never been able to decide, and historians, linguists, and archeologists are about evenly decided for or against its genuineness. Mr. Holand’s book, one of the most important documents for the study of the stone, gathers together everything that could be learned about the discovery of the stone, early investigations , controversies about it, and present and able case for its authenticity. He covers very thoroughly Scandinavian historical material, epigraphic parallels, and linguistic analysis, all in easily followed form. In addition to the Kensington Stone Mr. Holand covers the Norse discovery of North America by Bjarne and Leif Erikson, and the settlements in Vinland, which have recently been found archeologically. He also covers other finds of Scandinavian artifacts in North American, and the controversial theory that the Greenland or Vinland settlers eventually blended with the Mandan Indians. -- Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
