"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..."
- Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Recommended Tea: Celestial Seasonings Honey Vanilla Chamomile

Right before bedtime every night, I will usually snuggle up with (what else?) a good cup of tea and a good book. I will be right in the middle of a gut-wrenching declaration, or a revelation, or just a dang good plot twist when all of a sudden... I hear it.

"MAW!"

It is my cat, Lizzy. Like the inspiration for her name, Elizabeth Bennett, Lizzy is beautiful, intelligent, active, and - most of all - talkative.

"Maw! Mawmawmaw! Maw! Maaaaaaaw!"

If only life could be like Lassie. I struggle to translate Lizzy's cries. "Are you hungry? Do you want to snuggle? Do you need something?" Inevitably the thing that I try to comfort her with is the very thing she DOESN'T want.

If only we could get inside of our pets minds and decipher their meaning.

That is exactly what Virginia Woolf (the object of my current literary obsession) has done with Flush: A Biography. Flush, a spaniel, is taken from a life in the country to live with Elizabeth Barrett Browning (who is at this point just Elizabeth Barrett) in London. The poetess is living as a recluse and as an invalid, and Flush - making the ultimate sacrifice that a dog can make - gives up his love for trees and fields for her.

But hold on just a second! Before you even go there, let me tell you what Flush is not. Flush is NOT Lady in the Tramp, The Incredible Journey, or Milo and Otis. Flush is a very true, real, and beautiful love story. Flush and Elizabeth both sacrifice for each other, spend their time together, and ultimately must learn how to communicate their love without the luxury of speech. This love that exists between them, this love that must be felt more than it is expressed, is so deep, and Woolf writes it perfectly. There is not even a trace of Disney here.

Another fantastic thing about this story is that we witness the courtship of Elizabeth and Robert Browning through Flush's eyes (Flush was, in real life, the only one who DID witness their courtship). BUT, though the Brownings are one of the most compelling couples in history, this is not a story about them - it is about Flush and Elizabeth, the depth and range of that magical thing "connection," the sacrifices that one will make in order to keep a connection alive and well.

So what did Flush teach me? What I learned from Flush is that loyalty and love are things to be cherished - things that cannot be found easily. And when those two things exist in a relationship and they are real, you don't need words (not even Elizabeth Barrett Browning's). ( )

This is the story of the romance of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning as seen through the eyes of Elizabeth’s dog, Flush. My public library categorizes this as “Biography” as does the designation on the back of my copy. Virginia Woolf’s notes at the end of the book tells where she found the information she includes which qualifies it as biography. Most importantly, my 999 Biography category needs more help than my 999 Poets & Poetry category! That said, this is a delightful read for a leisurely afternoon. Woolf really understands dogs and Flush is very believable and a well rounded “character.” Highly recommended for those who love dogs and/or Virginia Woolf. ( )

Short and humorous, this book holds many delights. Elizabeth Barrett and her romance with Browning is observed by a pampered Cocker Spaniel called Flush. Woolf conjures up a perfect picture of mid 19th Century London; the class-ridden world explored through the nose, eyes and ears of Flush the dog.

Woolf ‘s biographical foray brings to life the world of Elizabeth Barrett, in a free-floating manner that conjures up the physicality and inner workings of their environs. Flush is adopted as the adored pet of Barrett, he is kidnapped, he suffers jealous attacks on Robert Browning when he visits, and eventually is won over in his affections.

Flush is described as a snobbish dog, highlighted by his required adjustment when the couple moves to Italy to marry.

‘but here in Pisa, though dogs abounded, there were no ranks; all – could it be possible? – were mongrels……..Flush felt himself like a prince in exile. He was the sole aristocrat among a crowd of canaille.

In Italy he suffers fleas, finds love, and learns of the carefree life in the sunny climes of the South, where he explores the streets and sights and countryside of Italy in charming fashion.

Delightful, physically palpable realism is tucked into this parable about English society, with a humorous and oblique glimpse at the famous love affair from the perspective of a canine. Her portrait of Flush gives the well-known story a whimsical and fantastical bent.

Just lovely to read. ( )

A charming, delightful short story of the relationship between poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning as seen from the point of view of Barrett's spaniel pet Flush. Humorous and cleverly told. ( )

Flush: A Biography

Descrição do livro

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0192833286, Paperback)

'I lay in the garden and red the Browning love letters, and the figure of their dog made me laugh so I couldn't resist making him a Life.' Throughout her career, Woolf invokes the animal world both directly and metaphorically. She started to write a biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's spaniel after finishing The Waves, tracing the life of the spaniel from his country origins, his puppyhood spent with the writer Mary Mitford, through his sheltered existence with Elizabeth Barrett in her sick room, and later travels in Florence. But Flush is much more than a playful writer's holiday. As well as offering an exploration of a life of the senses free from the tyranny of words, Flush can be read as an allegorical testimony to the inscrutable, discarded, unrepresentable lives of the Victorian women poets, who were barely discussed or read in the 1930s. From a quite literally low point of view, Woolf explores class and gender in Victorian London, with gently mocking humour. Charming yet also radical, Flush is a work of sensuous imagination, an apparently light text that opens up a range of questions concerning difference which are woven through the whole of Woolf's writing.
