... in a general view of science, then forget Bill Bryson's work (or switch it to Amusing and Educational), and go for Almost Everyone's Guide To Science by John Gribbin: much more meat on the bones, and the writing is better. I keep meaning to write up my review of Almost Everyone's Guide to Science by John Gribbin. Works up through the scales from the very smallest to the universe, covering physics, chemistry and biology along the way. ... to go back and update my previous list, but it would have lost a number of touchstones that still work. I've recently read Almost Everyones Guide to Science by John Gribbin, and thought it excellent. It's in the pile awaiting review ... ... astronomy related books, but First Light by Richard Preston was a good find, and the book I am currently reading - Almost Everyone's Guide To Science by John Gribben - gives a very good high level summary (as of 1998).
