I always think of Magician, Diamond Throne and Dragon Lance Autumn Twilight first when I think of fantasy novels. Those were my big three I read them all around the same time. By the time I finished those three series there Fantasy had its claws in me good and tight. After that Wizards Fir ... ... where were you even supposed to start?). Margaret Weis seems to be a big name there. Her dragon series, starting with Dragons of Autumn Twilight, appear to be bedrock to the series, but I'm not seeing any summaries for them describing gem dragons.

This took me a couple of weeks to get through. I liked (loved!) the D&D references throughout, of course, but the story just didn't feel that original to me. This story had so many of the "typical" fantasy elements, ... ... and other authors wrote a large number of books and short stories set in the same world.

I preferred Dragons to Twins myself - I enjoyed the second series just not as much as the first. The third series with everyone's kids has been just okay in my opinion. Its all the spin off stuff by other authors that really bugs, heh.
I haven't read the Death Gate stuff yet, ... ... enjoyed the inital works but decidedly downhill after that.
Dragonlance you really think the Twins is better than dragons ? I pretty much loathed twins, I thought it a stupid plot, and didn't have the same adventure feel that the original did. Put me off reading any of the others.
