In 1940, Alan Moorehead was sent to cover the North Africa campaign by the Daily Express, and he followed its dramatic course all the way to 1943. The three books he subsequently wrote about the Desert War - later collected as his 'African Trilogy' - were swiftly acclaimed as a classic account of the tussle between Montgomery's Eighth Army and Rommel's Afrika Corps, amidst the endless harsh wastes of the Western Desert. Moorehead was responsible for the celebrated insight that tank battles in the desert are like battles at sea, the lumbering tanks like ships lost in a vast ocean of sand. The New Statesman could not have put it better when it described his achievement with this riveting book: 'There is something of genius in the breadth and penetration of his vision, which encompasses the whole panorama of war and then narrows it down to the particular: the soldier stubbing out his cigarette before going into action, the expression on a tank commander's face as he is hit... The story of the African campaigns will go down in history as one of the great epics of mankind, largely thanks to Mr Moorehead's account.'… (mais)

We written account of the author’s time covering WW2. Primarily across N Africa but also other travels including the US in the first 6 months of our entry into the war. The writing is excellent, and done in the moment not with benefit of the big picture. Very good insights into the personalities who were responsible for decision making as well as understanding the soldier at the point of the spear. Recommended. ( )

Un recorrido de primera mano por un testigo presencial en los campos de batalla del norte de africa durante la segunda guerra mundial. ( )

The cover of my edition of this book shows a photo of six single-engine fighters with USAAF markings -- evidently, though I am no expert, P-47 Thunderbirds. Wikipedia seems to confirm my suspicion that no such planes ever flew in combat in North Africa. This is irritating to a pedant such as myself. (Though less so than the cover of Connie Willis's Blackout, which implicitly depicts B-17s dropping bombs on London.)

Part of a quite good series of books by Alan Morehead, a war correspondent, written during and immediately following events of WW2 Not well documented or literary masterpieces but gritty recollections of someone who was there. A useful and personal analysis of the role of senior leadership during the first year of the Desert War is provided as a concluding chapter to a year of battle. An obscure arena in WW2 but the 25 + divisions (2/300,000) prime German soldiers captured here were removed from the board prior to invading Europe. These troops were willing to surrender and thus could not take part in the fanatical defense of the Reich that ended WW2 in Europe. ( )
