It had me hooked from the beginning and normally I do not like Mafia Style Books. This absolutely Tore my Heart Strings, flipped it around, and did some things to me that I have not felt in a while. I adored Corrado and this book and I am probably a fool for reading this first because other reviewers seem to warn me against that BUT I did (Hell it is 0.4 for a reason!) I think that this story had everything it needed. It kept me on the edge of my chair and I just wanted to know what would happen next. The Mafia hits were not too much for me. Definitely excited, to read the rest of this series. 5 STARS “Everyone was good at something. Some people painted. Others played music. Corrado just happened to be good at murder. He accepted that. Embraced it. That was who he was. The Kevlar Killer.” It was my first book by J.M Darhower but now i guess i am gonna dig and find every other book of hers and read all of them within a month for sure !! I am such a big fan of hers now !! This novel i must say, it felt like the author had poured her heart out in that story. "Your light is the only thing in this world not tainted by my darkness." It was truly incredible. Beautiful, angry, possessive, raw, dark and gritty It was a bit lengthy but never losing my interest, very captivating. I loved Corrado as much as i loved Celia :) Still,it was a very beautiful story. And my heart ached to read the last words of the book. Corrado's whole life unfolds in front of us. It was phenomenal the way author plotted all the events of his life. "What made you this way?" Recommended to everyone. 5 "You are the Only Thing in the World That Makes Me Feel" Stars! What an unbelievably touching and heart breaking story. I loved the glimpse into the mafia world which unfolds over several decades in this detailed book. Corrado makes you almost understand what could cause someone to shut down their feelings sufficiently enough to become a hit man. If you are a fan of mafia romances, then I can't recommend Made highly enough! First off, it is worth noting that if you, like me, have not yet had a chance to read any of the other Sempre novels, then don't worry, Made can be read as a standalone. All that said, if you do so, be aware that there are definitely some spoilers in this novel that will be revealed over the course of Corrado's life and which will affect your reading of the other Sempre novels should you later choose to go back and read them. And believe me, after you read this story, you will want to do just that! This story starts at the very beginning of Corrado Moretti's childhood. From the start, you get a view of the sad world Corrado was born into. His mother is an alcoholic who loves to abuse him. His twin sister aspires to cling to whatever shred of love still remains in the corpse of a body that is his mother by following in her abusive footsteps. His father, well he cares, but isn't around much to make much of a difference; and doesn't necessarily show his love in traditional ways. You get the sad sense that Corrado as a child doesn't even know who his father really is. Instead, he is left to piece it all together bit by bit, through the eyes of an innocent child, as he slowly rules out what else his father possibly could not be. His teenage years only get worse before they get, arguably, better. Left to fend for himself the life cycle of crime eventually repeats itself. Above everything else Corrado is a survivor, and he learns to do whatever is necessary to survive, even kill. Somewhere along the way, however, he becomes detached. Just when he thinks he will never feel again, love shows him another reality. It is only for love that he will risk everything. But loving a self-professed, monster, can never be easy, even if she comes from the same world. What an amazing journey! In a world where loyalty and honor mean everything--a line that has always been clearly defined for Corrado--love eventually teaches him that sometimes you have to sacrifice it all. What an emotional read! I will warn you that the ending will have you in tears. The feats that Corrado will go to for his family will no doubt challenge your moral compass, but nonetheless leave you feeling like no other man could possibly love so unconditionally and so absolutely unselfishly. FGMAMTC Blog Review
The depth of this whole series just blows me away. The pain is so heavy, and the love is so beautiful. The other main men of the series, Vincent and Carmine, do make appearances. Many of the gaps are filled in. We see how the tragedy of Maura unfolds. All of this is in there, but this book belongs to Corrado so we really get to know the man behind the name.
The author takes us all the way back. As a little boy, Corrado goes through a life most of us can only imagine even as adults. He has to learn lessons fast and hard. Stating he has a horrible excuse for a mother is putting it mildly. Really he has no one.
Corrado isn't a good man in the traditional sense, but he it's hard not to fall for him. He does the best he can for the path he was put on. I didn't always like the outcome, but I think he made the best choices for the situation.
He's written in a true to form manner. Just because he is the main interest doesn't mean everything works out for him. He isn't looking for salvation or offering an apology.
His love for Celia, his honor as a man and his devotion to La Cosa Nostra are unshakeable. The complexity and breadth of character is profound. This character just speaks to my soul. He is definitely one of my top favorite book boyfriends.
I give it *way over* 5 stars.
This book is probably my top read for 2014. The previous books were on my past top reads lists. I recommend them all 200%.
