I waivered back and forth on my rating for this. The last 30% pushed it up to 4 stars. I enjoyed this book and thought quite a bit about it when I wasn't able to read it (damn work!). I have one complaint about Rylee. I can't stand for the h to be so overcome with lust she can't make a logical decision. She was just so forgiving of his bad behavior which, at times, I didn't think H deserved. I get that he had "childhood" issues but get professional help already! Anyway, I'm left waiting impatiently for "Fueled" to come out.

It's not a perfectly written book either which doesn't bother me...just a warning for those it does bother. I could still understand it all just fine. ( )

*UPDATE*

So I finished because of the movie. They aired the first half of the movie on Passionflix and left me curious as to what happened next. So I finished the book. I still don't like the characters. But I can see that Colton cares for Rylee more than he realizes and is able to show. I can see that he really is damaged and doesn't feel he can or deserve to be fixed. I still don't think it's an excuse for him to expect Rylee to be with him the way he wants while assuring her that he will hurt her and that he'll never be able to give her what she needs. And she allows that. All until that explosive conclusion to this book. Aside from the way he treats her boys, I can't see a reason why she's in love with him and it's frustrating to see her be a chump for him.

*ORIGINAL REVIEW*
Couldn't finish. I didn't like the characters. I hated the characters, in fact. And I didn't like how it was written. Most annoying was the complete over use of the word 'for'. Like in a way to make the writing sound super formal. And there weren't any contractions. So instead of saying "she's doing this" or "I'm doing that", it was always "she is" or "I am."

I'm just going to hope the movie is less annoying. ( )

The best description for this book/series in 10 words or less:
"Girl who struggles with past finds guy who struggles his."

The main characters are very interesting because they're very good at putting a public face when deep down they are messed up and their minds are obviously all over the place when either alone or just the two together. This novel tells Rylee's messed up past and why she can't let herself love or be loved or even enjoy herself with the opposite gender. She is strong as she clearly struggles with the decision whether to give in to heart or mind. She is very sassy and doesn't really let people tell her what to do while being compassionate to children who don't have a home or family. Colton's screwed up past isn't revealed, but I bet we find out about his crazy past in the next book. Colton is a man who is successful and obviously spoiled but he channels his anger through his driving. He seems like he just wants to enjoy life as much as he can to cover up his pain. He is also great with kids and making them comfortable as he interacts with the foster kids Rylee takes care of.

This novel really focuses on the issue of kids who live in foster homes. These kids don't have parents, have to rely on other adults to be temporary parents, and the home isn't completely their permanent home. Their lifestyle bleeds into their school and social lives as they have acted out in school or don't feel like they are enough. Colton was once a kid who was adopted from a bad place in life.

Since I read the ebook, I didn't know this was a series while most of the novels in this genre are either stand-alones or companions. The ending seemed extremely abrupt and horrible if the reader didn't know it was a series. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that there will be more about Rylee and Colton. I did some digging and found out that this is both a series and a companion that also has its own series, which I am excited to read.

The pacing was very erratic. It was fast and then slow and then fast again. It felt like a roller coaster that would make you extremely sick if you weren't used to reading stuff like this often.

OMG - this is a roller coaster of a story. Colton the strong alpha male is hard a heartless sometimes and then he can turn around and be so vulnerable and kind. He had a bad experience as a child (before he was adopted at age 8) and it has scarred his life. He meets Rylee his total opposite who works with young boys in the foster system so she has some idea of what his childhood might have been like if only he would open up to her.
This story was just getting good when it ended - I hate to be left hanging like that but you can bet I've already picked up the 2nd book in the series. ( )

I still don't like Colton. I get that he has baggage but Rylee is the only one doing any giving in the 'relationship'. She even admits that she isn't cut out for his 'rules' but does he care? No, he keeps pushing her anyway. He tells her that he WILL break her heart. Does it stop him? No. I want to be mad at Rylee for not being stronger and standing up to him, but then I realized I would have done the same thing. Let some pretty boy walk all over me while I am the only one trying to made any changes or compromising anything. Rylee is the reason I gave the book 3 stars; if I didn't love her, it would have been 1 star.
That ending?!?!? That is the reason I will keep reading. I have to know! ( )
