I really enjoyed In a Sunburned Country too, and remember laughing hysterically over his description of Canberra's museum. I've loved almost everything I've read by Bryson, but I think Down Under (UK) / In a Sunburned Country (US), documenting his travels in Australia, was one of my favourites. But as an Aussie, I may be biased ;)
Loved the Dave Barry piece. I've got a pile of his books in a box at home ... I'm a travel narrative fan. Here are two that I love: In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson which is a funny look at his visit to Australia and An Unexpected Light by Jason Elliot which gives a westerner's wonderful insight into Afghanistan and its people. #161: A Short History of Nearly Everything is probably not where I would go for my next Bryson. You might give In a Sunburned Country, I'm a Stranger Here Myself, or The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid a try. ... on good companion books.
I see a new illustrated version of this book was just released as well.

>16 I agree with you on Bryson's humor and observations. I just finished listening to the book, and though I found some parts to get slightly tiresome, especially his preoccupation with poisonous creatures, I overall greatly enjoyed it. In a Sunburned Country is great too! I read it within the last month because I'm planning a trip to Australia next year, and I found the book really interesting. I recently read In a Sunburned Country because I'm planning a trip to Australia next year, and it was really interesting--only my second Bryson book, but both have been absolute pleasures to read because of his humor and observations. I hope you enjoy it! I just LOVE Bryson! Sunburned Country was one of my least favorite, but I can't recommend A Short History of Nearly Everything highly enough. I've listened to the audio twice and read it once. The Thunderbolt Kid is also quite good. Yea I actually started with In a Sunburned Country and then worked my way through all the rest of his books.
