About this edition: Honigmann’s editing is clear and helpful. Useful glosses are provided for difficult or archaic usage as well as helpful notes on understanding some of the repeated themes and phrases of the text. As with most introductions, I think it should be read after, not before, as it refers to minutely to the play that it is more helpful when the play details are fresh. I particularly like the section on the history of the play’s performance, and how actors have played the major roles.

Additionally, Honigmann lays out the evidence for some of the major questions about the play: was Iago in love with Othello, how does the play deal with the passage of time, what is the right tone for Iago, and most important to the editor: is Othello Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy? Honigmann says yes. While the text of Hamlet may excel in poetry and Lear in pathos, both are often criticized as too long in performance. In performance, Othello’s “extraordinary momentum and the audience response it generates place it, in these respects, ahead of its nearest rivals, Hamlet and King Lear.” ( )

En av Frans G Bengtssons bättre essäer är den om som beskriver hur en kulturellt helt obevandrad fotbollsreferent på en tidning i Chicago plötsligt får ta ordinarie teaterreferentens syssla. Som tur är pjäsen han får se Othello, och då Shakespeare som bekant redan i sin samtid hade en publik bestående av folk från de mest skilda delar av samhället så är även denna pjäs fylld av tillräckligt med fart och ståhej för att även någon som kanske inte indoktrinerats till att tycka att även högstämd poesi är värd att avnjuta kan finna den lyckad.

Som tragedi betraktad är Othello mycket lyckad; det är inga övernaturliga makter eller tillfälligheter som driver huvudpersonen mot sitt öde som i Macbeth, bara en infernaliskt skickligt beräknande Iago, och det finns inga försonande drag över huvudpersonens kamp som i Hamlet: när den danske prinsen dör så är det i en slags triumf, men när den venetianske generalen gör det så är det i ett tillstånd av mörkaste förtvivlan. Till skillnad från Romeo och Julia går det heller knappast att tänka sig Othello med ett lyckligt slut; även om det första blodet spills långt senare så vore hela svartsjukedramat tämligen poänglöst om det bara löses upp i intet.

Jämför man så istället med Köpmannen i Venedig så är Othello en för nutida sinnen betydligt mer acceptabel pjäs; även om äktenskapet mellan den svarte Othello och den ljusa Desdemona faktiskt slutar olyckligt så beror det främst på Iagos giftindränkta tal, inte på några rasistiska dumheter. Othello har också en helt annan typ av värdighet än Shylock, stammande mer från en i grunden god karaktär än en förmåga att motstå förnedring, och även om han oftast refereras till som »moren« så verkar det bara vara Iago som är beredd att hålla hans ursprung emot honom.

Othello kan helt klart försvara sin position som en av de främsta av Shakespears dramer, inte så mycket på grund av sina lyriska kvaliteter – som naturligtvis finns där, se bara på Othellos ord när han övertygats om Desdemonas otrohet:

All my fond love thus do I blow to heaven –
'Tis gone
Arise, black vengeance, from thy hollow cell!
Yield up, O love, thy crown and hearted throne
To tyrannous hate! Swell, bosom, with thy fraught,
For 'tis of aspics' tongues

– utan för att själva den underliggande handlingen är så superb, känslorna så stora, och katastrofen så fullständig. ( )
