LibraryThing was originally intended for the personal collections of individuals, couples and families. But churches and companies, schools and museums have also discovered it. Currently, the only difference between organizational and personal LibraryThing accounts is the pricing.
[edit] Organizational pricing
- Book clubs, knitting clubs, blog rings, etc. Use a personal account. In the future, there will be some "group" features so members can have separate accounts but one joined library.
- Non-profit and not-for-profit organizations (small libraries, churches, clubs, schools, classrooms). Free to 200 books. $15/year for up to 5,000 books.
- For-profit (companies, booksellers, organized crime). Free to 100 books. $30/year to 500 books. $50/year to 5,000 books.
- Booksellers may use LibraryThing to list their inventory, but not as their primary interface to sell books. They must pay for a for-profit organizational account, and are not allowed to solicit other LibraryThing users.)
Upgrade to an organizational account here.
[edit] Do you have separate administrator and user accounts?
No, LibraryThing currently has no distinction.
[edit] How will other people see my organization's catalog?
You can show your library to others by directing them to the URLs listed on your profile page. They do not need to have a LibraryThing account to view your organization's library catalog. The links should look like this, where the UserName is actually the user name on LibraryThing.
- http://www.librarything.com/profile/UserName (profile)
- http://www.librarything.com/catalog/UserName (catalog)
(Note: If you've set your account to private, no one will be able to view your library catalog unless they are logged into it.)
[edit] Will my members/patrons/anyone be able to add, edit, or delete books from the catalog?
Only users who are actually logged into the account with the user name and password have the ability to add, edit, or delete.
[edit] Can I set the display style for other people to view my catalog?
Yes. You can customize which columns you want to display in your library, and then set a "Suggested display style for visitors to your library" by clicking "edit" next to the display styles (ABCDE) in your catalog. Visitors then get this as an option to use this when they look at your library.
[edit] Does LibraryThing have circulation tracking features?
We don't. Most members use tags to keep track of which books are loaned out (ie, tag a book "out - Kim").
