So, I see the BR site is up and running...are there plans for the PT version?

My understanding of the discussion in the nominate a language thread (which I know you participated in -- as the only native Portuguese speaker of any dialect I think) was as follows:

- Tim thinks it's only worth having one Portuguese site to start.

- Because there are more Brazilian users (net-wide or site-wide, I'm not sure), that is the initially chosen dialect.

- BR is really the language code for LT's chosen Portuguese dialect, not the country code.

- In looking for inspiration for site-wide usage questions, like tu / você / a senhora or how to translate "tag", we reference .br sites rather than .pt sites.

- In much the same way, a bunch of the translations in the FR version have been added by someone in Quebec.

Now that you've started adding translations, do you think that was wrong? Are you finding that you have to choose or does it seem to come out close enough either way? I'm sure we could persuade Tim to change if it's going to be a mess.

I've been adding brazilian portuguese translations but I must say that the original portuguese terms and phrasing would be substantially different.

It's worth it to apply Tim's idea of copying the version into the pt site and making adjustments.

If the brazilian version was supposed to be the only pt language version there's no point in calling it br!

I've been looking forward to having Librarything translated into Portuguese, but for now I'll keep using the English version. Even though Portuguese and Brazilian are similar, there are key differences that makes the Brazilian translation too weird for me to use.
Not only in terms of grammar, which is always the biggest difference, but also some names/phrases that one country uses but the otehr doesn't know.

Tim's idea of copying the BR version and letting us translate it into PT would be the best option, IMO. here's hoiping he doesn't give up the idea.

Either in English or PT, this will remain one of my favorite websites.

So, the plan then is to complete the site under the working designation BR, then fork it and fix one to be more PT, and also perhaps allow Brazilians to make the other even more BR? I cannot see how anyone would object to that. That will still be less work than starting each from scratch now, right?

UK English users (who probably outnumber non-English users) have similarly said that they find Americanisms in the site weird to use. I expect that there will be a UK version too, once everything is in play.

Well, I just became aware of this board after making a few edits. I did wipe most of claudiadias's more obvious Portuguese-isms (great work, though!). To avoid unnecessary work for you when br.librarything is forked into pt.librarything I'll refrain from that for now, and will tackle untranslated strings exclusively.

I've also edited many strings for length.

I support having separate websites for Portugal and Brazil. From the blog post, the decision appears to be made.

Claudia, please, don't brazilianize your edits. I'm a brazilian, but I learn a lot about MY language when I read or listen portuguese people, because they have the apropriate word for every thing. "Enlace" for "link", for instance.

And Brazil is a very large country. I'm living in the south. For me the portuguese spoken in the north of Brazil is an alien-but-near language in the very same way that the portuguese spoken in Portugal.

So, feel free to write in your language, because that's our language.

Well cesar, that brings us to the dillema: should we translate it using the "correct" terms or the widely used ones?...we'll see how all this turns out!

Actually, I've never seen "Enlace" being used as a substitute for "Link". The only word I've seen so far is "Ligação". Enlace sounds a lot more Brazilian than Portuguese, to me at least.

I've checked the statistics, and we're up to 65%.
What's missing, I wonder? There are a lot of things that don't seem to have a translation, like "Psst", so maybe the translations is actually a lot closer to 100%.

Here's hoping that it is, so we can start on the PT version. :)
