Sobre mimI'm the founder and publisher of Valancourt Books, the bestest small press in the whole, wide world. I'm also, in my spare time, an attorney. I live in Kansas City with two literarily inclined cats, Valancourt and Vathek.

Sobre a minha bibliotecaI'm primarily interested in rare novels from 1790-1830 and the 1890s. Of particular interest are books published by the Minerva Press, Gothic novels, supernatural and detective fiction. I also collect some scarce modern books, especially those published by the Coltsfoot and Acolyte Presses. A substantial percentage of the books in my library can be found in fewer than five libraries worldwide, and at least one is apparently unique.

Wow, ten cents! I thought I got the best deal - one dollar at an antique store. Mine's a dark color, I'm not sure whether it's black or brown, printed in double columns, with Waverley Novels stamped in gold, now worn, on the cover. I wouldn't say it's large, but it is bigger than typical books.

Looking through your library, I found it interesting to see that you also have a copy of the volume of the edition of Waverley Novels from the turn of the century that includes Quentin Durward as well as two other novels. I was surprised that someone else had that exact book!

I just wanted to say thank you for publishing "The Beetle" by Richard Marsh. I had always heard about it in reference to "Dracula" which made me curious to read it. Unfortunately, I could never find a copy of it without special ordering. So when you released your edition I immediately snatched it up. And I just have to say it's an excellent edition! Whoever provided the notes did a fantastic job. I've really enjoyed it and am happy to add it to my "gothic" collection.

I've purchased several books published by Valancourt and have not been disappointed yet. Keep up the good work!

Which book is unique?

The author was a journalist/fiction writer, contemporary of Bierce, based in San Francisco. The book I mentioned is a collection of short stories, styled as "contes-cruels." Several of the stories can be found in scattered horror story anthologies. The original book had a lovely "decadent" design: blood red cloth with a gold dragon on the front cover. It is a rare book and I for one would love to buy a hardcover copy of a competent facsimile. Hint. Hint.

I am hooked on Valancourt Books!!! I started by purchasing the Northanger Canon ("Castle of Wolfenbach," "The Necromancer," "Midnight Bell," etc) and now I've expanded to other works like "Curios" and "The Joss" (Richard Marsh), "The Witch of Ravensworth," and am eagerly awaiting the release of Bram Stoker's "The Mystery of the Sea." I look forward to reading and discovering more from VB!! Thanks for bringing such great stories back into print!

I just finished 'Rust of Gold', and enjoyed the entire collection very much. As my primary fictional love is all things supernatural, my favorite tale was "A Ghost of the Sea", but I also liked "The Skirts of Chance" as well.

As a practicing lawyer I envy you for leaving the profession to follow a cooler calling. But I need to stay in funds in order to buy books, including Valancourt titles. Eventually I plan to buy, and hopefully read, all of them. I have picked up The Magic Ring, by the way. Keep up the good work!

Your press looks so intriguing! I looooove Broadview Press and their reprints, and Valancourt seems similiar (not that I'm calling it derivative, mind you!!). What is the actual typeface like? Is it a facsimile of the original, or is the text reset in a modern font? Yay 18th-19th century obscure fiction! I'll have to choose a title to buy ASAP!
