There seems to be no shortage of dubious alternative "history" books on "What if the South had won ?" but very few, if any, on
what might have happened if there had been no war at all - if Southern politicians had dropped the issue of pressing Slavery into the West, if the planters and slave breeders had realized their economic model was obsolete, if the majority poor non-slaveholding whites had actually had a voice in the decision to Secede?
Do you know of any books which may touch on these possibilities ??

I found the paperback in a little general store in Michigan when I was on vacation, in 1975 I think. I was entranced; a perfect mix of romantic Victorian drama with characters developed from appealing architypes but with strong individuality.
How did you come across this information?
