Sobre mim Real name: Christopher Holland
------------------------------
Work as a web/technology consultant, currently working on LibraryThing itself. I've worked on the in-place editing for your catalog. I wrote most of the code behind Common Knowledge. I wrote most of the code for displaying reviews on the site. I prototyped most of LibraryThing Local. And I've dabbled in most of other code at some level or another. See my WikiThing page for more information about my past and current LibraryThing projects.
You can get me at christopher at librarything dot com.
Also do quite a bit of photography, drawing, and painting. You can find some of my photos on Flickr under the username of conceptDawg.
I graduated from Mississippi State University and on weekends in the Fall you can most likely find me back in Starkville for a football game and some tailgating. Feel free to contact me and hang out at our tailgate if you're going to a game at MSU.
My ideas about design and interface were summed up rather brilliantly by Mr. Emerson quite a while before I came along:
"The beautiful rests on the foundations of the necessary."
"We ascribe beauty to that which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its ends."
Goodness, that is perfect.
Sobre a minha biblioteca Most of my books are related to either art and art history or computer technology. I have a few fiction paperbacks, but those usually end up being given to friends or "loaned" out permanently when I am finished with them.
I have eclectic interests: archaeology; history; technology; history of technology; secret societies (freemasons, templars, mostly from my interest in archaeology as I've been to many of the places where their histories played out).

My question: I have a library of approximately 3-4,000 books that I want to catalog based on the dewey decimal or Library of Congress or other such respected cataloging system. The software I've Googled is for much larger libraries which need to be able to check books in and out and a whole lot more than what I need. I'm looking for fairly basic library sofware for a home library that will allow me to inventory and organize my books in keeping with standards utilized for much bigger libraries. Do you or any of your friends or acqaintances know the names of software packages that do this?
Any direction or advice you can give me would be appreciated.

I may not be telling the right person, so forgive me and hopefully you can pass this information onto the correct department.
In the gallery, author Ridley Pearson is identified as Ellen Rimbauer which is a character in his book, The Diary of Rose Red. Just thought I'd let you know.
Thanks,
Dana

For the life of me I'm not sure just what it is you're competing for. Most of the dedicated LibraryThing users are "keepers" as well as readers and have paid the lifetime membership already because we appreciate all the sort and tag functionality. Meanwhile, I think the social network aspect, while by no means bare bones, doesn't seem quite as attractive as the way it's done on GoodReads or Shelfari!
I'm not looking for LibraryThing to make my 5,000 book database available to Goodreads - well, now that I think on it I suppose in a sense I am - so much as I'd like an "import my reviews" sort of functionality.
But, I guess this goes back to proprietary use. If I'm building the personal database from mostly Amazon data and writing my own reviews, once you have my membership fee what exactly are you protecting or competing for? This looks to me more like fish and kelp competing over who gets to use the ocean.
Can my tagging schemes be sold as some sort of geek algorithm?
I hope you're not planning to billboard this out like MySpace or Facebook where the functionality drowns in the net noise.

I'm not sure if you would be the go-to developer for this but I'm a lifetime member of LibraryThing
http://www.librarything.com/profile/Dann...
and a new-ish member of the book site Goodreads
http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/72162
which are fairly complimentary sites - and I was wondering if there were any plans in the works to more closely link or integrate these two sites.
Regards and best wishes - Barney Dannelke

Not sure if you are the correct person, but I was unable to add my Facebook "fan" page to my profile. It would be great to be able to do that. Thanks!

I like the new member page and have just one suggestion: Under the section entitled "Member's Zeitgheist", why not list the number of the rating of the size of the member's library as it grows. I was chatting to Tim one day and he easily told me I was 16,500 in size that day. I believe you have an easy way to do this, and I would be sooooo happy to see my numbers bring me up the ladder. And yes, I suppose it IS PURE ego and against my theology, but I just think it would be the neatest thing!

Re: http://www.librarything.nl/talktopic.php...
At present, I cannot even ping LT.com (www.librarything.com) any more. When trying and pinging LT.com, I get : "host www.librarything.com cannot be found". Because of this, of course, a call for whatever LT.com page is returning a 404 error.
I can ping (and reach) LT.nl [72.12.88.181] though. Then again, LT.nl (as a whole) is crippled far beyond the original report.
Yours,
boekerij.

Downloads of my own library, access to titles for editing are running incredibly slow - 3 to 5 minutes to download library or re-sort.
What's up with that? My speed test indicates normal download timesthrough my modem, generally.
Thanks for looking.

I am unable to access the 50 similar libraries under Connections. This has been going on quite a long while and I actually do miss it. I think it's a nice feature. I did report this to Abby a while back and I think she said she would report it to Tim? Thanks!

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '12 Monkeys: A Novel', books_sortcharacter=1, books_authorunflip='Hand, Eliza' at line 3
UPDATE bookstack SET books_tags='Science Fiction,Novelization'', books_title='12 Monkeys: A Novel', books_sortcharacter=1, books_authorunflip='Hand, Elizabeth', books_date='1995', books_ISBN='0061056588', books_admin_sameness=1819554821, books_yourrev='0', books_sort_author='handelizabeth', books_rating=0, books_datebought = 0, books_datestarted = 0, books_dateread = 0, books_sameness_resolved = 2033384120, books_copies = 1, books_lang = 'eng', books_lang2 = '', books_lang_original = '', books_indexed = 0, books_refresh = 1 WHERE books_id=15279005 AND books_userid='dnorum'
- fatal error (31.1)
I apologize if this is mentioned elsewhere, but it looks like there's something buggy with whatever code handles the SQL commands (queries? - I'm not familiar with SQL).
