Hi Danny,

It's here, it's here, it's here. Your second book, 'Beginning' is here! I cannot wait to read it. Thank you for setting up the email notification system. As soon as I received your email advising the early release, I forwarded it on to my local book store and they replied yesterday afternoon with an "it's here" comment, which was all the information I needed.
I must admit, I snuck out of work at 10.00am this morning to collect it, and it has been residing on my desk, in full view all day! Teased.
The anticipation is toe-curling. And I pulled a late shift tonight (I've only just got in), so... to have little or no sleep tonight or, fresh tomorrow. Hmmm, decisions, decisions!

Hello Danny, yes I don't often interact with people whose libraries are so wildly dissimilar from mine either. It's one of the charms of LT! Your library as entered seems to be fantastical literature, and I never was one for that. Talking animals not in cartoons and not possessed of lisps or Brooklyn accents simply piss me off and always have. Dragons? *sigh* Magic? Oh dear.

Science fiction featuring aliens never got my interest, either. I fear I am one of those literalists who thinks that we're it, ladies and gents, at least within our knowable reach. Still, that's what makes a horse race...all sorts and kinds.

I will head off to look at the music therapy site and many thanks for the pointer. It is always fun to me to learn about something I hadn't heard of before!

Hello Danny...I realize that you have no idea who I am, and thus might think this message a bit odd; you were a featured author recently and I looked into your books and profile as is my habit. I had never heard of a "music therapist" before, though I am well-acquainted with your brethren and sistern in massage therapy (bad feet, bad gait, blessed relief in theraputic massages).

Then Tim Spalding announced the minority stake sale of LT to CIG. One of CIG's companies is called "Bach to Rock." It is a for-profit company that provides music education nationwide, and you can look them up at: http://www.cambridgeinformationgroup.com...

I have no idea if this will be useful to you. I was and am verschmeckled at the idea of a music therapist, and so it's been in the thought-tumbler since I read about it; things tend to fall out of the tumbler when a connected thought that's new to me (a chain of for-profit music schools?!) shows up.

Any road, all good fortune with your degree (gorgeous part of Virginia you're in, just drove down I-81 this past fall going from Long Island to Texas for my daughter's wedding) and best of luck with your books!

I'm glad you like it so much. It must be incredibly different from learning the other languages too since the dynamics of vocalising them are so different, to stick to the linguistic terms I know. ^-^;

Ooooh... That sounds like it's a wonderful job, actually. I've always loved music, though, so the thought of using it to help others is a beautiful one. I'm glad you're in a position where you can do something like that and that you seem to be enjoying it. (Why else go for an MA?) ^-^
Hmm... Is there any book on music therapy that you'd recommend as an introduction? Reads easier than a website. ^-^

Planning to put your whole library on LT or just the interesting books? ^-~ (I'm still missing the books in the attic and my mum's cookbooks. I should really add the latter so I know which ones I shouldn't get her as a present.)

I'd imagine that depends on the books you get yourself. ^-~ To be fair, though, the only books I can read fluently are the English and Dutch books. My library actually gives a bit of a skewed image of my linguistic abilities. ^-^; Not necessarily so much of my interests, though. It runs in the family. So you've studied French, German, Spanish and American Sign Language? Which was your favourite?

Do you sing yourself or play an instrument? *curious now since the bio doesn't say* Sheet music is an area I really should get more of. I'm not a great singer, but I do enjoy it.

Any of the sub-cultures in particular or just in general? (I'm afraid I don't know too much about their history, though.)

Uhm... That's a good question... *thinks, because looking it up is cheating* Obviously there's present day English, some Old English, some Middle English, some Early Modern English, Dutch, Maori (which I misspelled lacking the knowledge of how to do macrons easily), Japanese, my dialect (well, I say 'my', but it's actually from a different city), uhm... There's a Latin book which I've misplaced (and thus isn't listed on LT) somewhere in the house, and there's my old Greek grammar book, my language learning books (Welsh, Irish) and my dictionaries (German being the unmentioned language of those) and... I think that's it. So that's 13ish, counting everything. If you count just the fiction it goes down to 8.

Yourself? Guessing from your recently added books, you've a fondness for Irish(/Celtic) mythology?

Help yourself to the 'viral napping' but beware...I don't think there is a vaccine developed for it yet...we had lots of coffee this morning and it didn't seem to have any effect! Not sure how original I am, it seems like everything these days can have 'viral' added to it to explain that snowballing, spontaneous combustion kind of experience.

"Two more days" is actually the first three words of my all-time favorite song which begins "Two more days is all you ever wanted/Paint your face; it's time to be social."

At the time, I think I just really liked the song, but I've continued to use it because I like that "two more days" can be wishing something would go on, reminding yourself that something unpleasant is almost over, or a countdown of sorts to something pleasant or unpleasant. It's kind of a multi-faceted carpe diem for me.

And that was probably way more explanation than you really wanted. :)

Unfortunately, my dear, I cannot attend the Mid-Atlantic GD get-together. Next year, I promise!

Seems there's more to this retirement business than just not showing up! I've been the school librarian around here for 25 years, and packing up all my cra--erm, stuff (!) is taking forever. In addition, I have to get the shelves and files in ready condition when the new librarian takes over in the fall.

Take lots of pictures, and send me a synopsis!!

It is indeed beautiful although occasionally I find it makes me dribble a little (when I drink from it not just from looking at it!) Sounds like we were, indeed, both there at the same time. I was in NOLA from 97-2001 working on my undergrad, then moved back down there from 2003-2005 to do my Master's. Incidentally, I both grew up in, and lived in for that 2-year interval, northern Virginia! I actually grew up in Reston, went to high school in Arlington (VA, not TX), and when I moved back up there, had a place in Ashburn. Winchester's not more than, what, an hour from there? How's that for coincidence?

What exactly is music therapy? One of my brothers did his undergrad in performance art (music), and is considering going back for his Master's. As I understand it, his chief difficulty is that most schools have limited spots available for each instrument, so opportunities are limited.

How did I decide on my favorite fantasy creatures? Hamadryads because I love the idea of trees being distinct individuals with dryads that mirror how the tree looks. The Waterhorses and Selkies because I'm attracted to water; I find it calming and when in large bodies like lakes and oceans it seems to hold secrets or mysteries. The idea of them being creatures between worlds able to live on land among mortals and then return is facinating to me.

I majored in Comparative Religion, which is where most of my books come from -- college days. Though, yes, I was once a Christian and now I'm "Pagan" -- not Wiccan, but I practice Witchcraft.

I can't wait until I finally get around to a paid account -- I've got way more books I'd love to add.

I've never heard of Eddings, its my own little creation. Its derived from the teachings of an offshoot of Hindu yoga and Theosophy known as the Ancient Wisdom tradition. Of course, now that you've mentioned it, I'm going to have to go track down a copy of the Belgariad to read.

Dear Danny,

I am so sorry for the tardy reply, but this fall has been so busy! You asked me what "with meat air freshener" meant in reference to one of my books. My husband and I went to see Chuck Palaniuk at the National Press Club for his Haunted book tour, and whenever he signs books he always gives you something and for Haunted it was a meat air freshener. It is in the shape of a T-bone steak and it smells like meat. Gotta love Chuck! It really was the best book signing I have ever attended. He is an absolute riot!

Thanks for your nice comment! I don't ALWAYS have super-librarian powers, but I was on a roll that day, for sure! ; ) Havne't had anything to equal that since, though. I took a peek at your first book...I do believe that I shall have to purchase a copy (new and exciting fantasy authors are a rare breed, in my opinion)! Can't wait to see what kind of wonderful world you created!

lol! It's a part of my evil plan to take control of the world by confusing people who visit my profile! BWAhahahahaha! *cough* er...My parents are in the army (hence the name) and are currently stationed in Virginia. When I moved out to go to college, I tried to only bring the books I hadn't read yet, so slightly more than half of my books are with my parents.

You were wondering where I get my signed books. I live in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of the US Midwest. We have lots of chain stores and several independent bookstores, which is where I've gotten most of my books signed. Some are copies that a store had that I just picked up, but the majority of my signd collection is a result of me getting my books into the hands of an author. I just meet Terry Jones, from Monty Python, Friday evening at Augsburg College. Sometimes there quite a crowd, but quite often it's a much mre intimate gathering and you can chat with a writer for some time. Lots of fun.

Hi buchleser,
Canadian Bookworms is just a chance for Canadians on LT to connect. We don't read just Canadian lit or specifically discuss it. I think there is another group (maybe with Canucks in the name, I can't remember) that does this.

I don't think Canandians read or buy books any differently from Americans but there are definitely fewer Canadian authors. I can't say I try too hard to look specifically for Canadian authors to read.

Yes, I really do have math tattoos :). I put a picture of them on my flickr account here. I got the top one in Berkeley, Ca and then I got the bottom one in Sydney Australia about a year later.

You asked me:
I'm curious, Zette: Why did you make that rule (of finishing everything you start) for yourself? Were you not giving endings to your stories, or were you coming back to stories you had started long ago and not remembering where you were headed with them, or was there another reason?

There are several reasons. One of the big ones is that it's far too easy to give up and start something new every time you (generic author you) hit a difficult spot in a story, rather than working through the problem and fixing whatever needs to be corrected. Giving up just means the person ends up with files full of unfinished stories, and that's an awful waste.

I had always tended to finish most of what I started, but as I met more writers, I saw how often they put stuff aside and never got back to it. I decided to take an active step not to go that way.

Since I write quickly, I think that helps me work through to the end, so I don't have the 'what was I doing here' problem, even if I do set something aside for a while. I will always get back to it within the year (Zette's rule # 2 is to finish the draft within the year), so stories rarely slip too far out of my thoughts.

Mental Health - not even a passtime, I just like the particular way TP cuts through the clouds we all live in. As someone who came to selfconfidence only in my 20s I'm still amazed at how much difference it makes. And amazed at the number of people who don't seem to have any.

It's an interesting idea... actually, I don't tend to take baths, and if I did I probably wouldn't draw in them because I'm very clumsy and would almost certainly drop things. But it's true I do tend to get my best ideas when I'm on the can or in the shower. Maybe TS Eliot was right and there's a strong connection between art and scatology, lol! Well, if it makes you feel better, I have read probably a third of the books in your catalog, even if I don't own them - for instance, Asimov, Pratchett, Niven... And the reason it doesn't show that we share the Pullman books is because mine are separate and yours is a set. There's no way to connect them yet. So we share a little more than you might think at first glance :)

My alias... Well. Easy answer is it's the name of my cat. It was given him by his previous family, who had him his two first years - he's 15 now so it was a while ago.

As for the name itself: It could come from anywhere, but my guess is the two young daughters in that first family decided to name him such because he is (was) quite mischievous and that is approximately the meaning of the word "busig" in swedish. And there's a swedish kid's comic where there's a mischievous Busifer...

But I usually tell it's derived from "bus" = trick(ster) and "-ifer" from Lucifer, kind of "Satan's trickster". More fun that way ;-)

Carmina Burana, I have never heard of but will go look up right now. It's actually from my nickname/potential pen name, Fatalis Fortuna. The initials being F. Fortuna, which has always just looked cool to me... :) Could be wrong though, I suppose?

I love that quote! :-D I use it all the time because it is so particularly apt. I stole it from Brooks' Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons from a Writing Life, which is a great book in general, especially if you are a fantasy writer. I'd definitely suggest reading it.

Thank you so much for the compliment on my bookshelves! It took me a long time to come up with something I thought I would like. Unfortunately it is still not enough space. I have since added another wide, tall unit (the pics there depict 3 wide units)as well as a series of shorter units to create a stair-step effect for my cats. I have managed to get all the fantasy paperbacks handled, but I am out of room for hardbacks again! :

Really they are not expensive shelves if you have the wall space. IKEA,s Billy line - about $50.00 per unit in white.
