It is somewhat addictive, I've just been on the OUP site to look at their booksale. I read Gissing's New Grub Street recently which surprised me, I'd thought it would out stare me from the shelf. I hope L.A.G. doesn't but its a formidable task, albeit I sense this author has an expediency you could trust.

Yesterday I selected Learning Ancient Greek by Peter Jones, from an Oxfam store which seemed quite full of possible purchases , I limited myself to 3; the aforementioned, plus Mary Wortley Montagu - Letters and a bitsize GCSE revise German. An acquisitive eye doesn't get you so far though, once said book's are home and dipped into one is left with the will, to muster perhaps, and to complete. I see you have L.A.G. tagged not read and wondered if this is likely in the near future to change. I with my dip in have been quite impressed, a little AG might be, fun's not the right word, necessary isn't either...perhaps something in between.

I know from your blog that one of the things you do where you can is to mention a worthwhile book, and so I am writing to you personally to make you aware that, with the blessing of E.F. Benson's estate, I have written a new "Mapp and Lucia" book, which will be published by Troubador on 1 September. The book is being endorsed by Gyles Brandreth, Tom Holt and Frank McGillion. Frank's name may be less familiar to you than the other two, but you may remember that he is a novelist who was nominated for the Booker Prize a few years back. I am already a best-selling non-fiction writer (with Wiley), but this is my first work of fiction to be published.
The book is called Major Benjy and fills in the chronological gap between Miss Mapp and Mapp and Lucia, that is to say that is set in the earlier part of the summer that Lucia and Georgie first arrive in Tilling. Various reviewers, including Tom and Frank, have been very kind to it and, though it is not my place to say so, I genuinely believe that it is well written and a faithful evocation of Benson's style.
You will be aware that there are of course may thousands of Benson fans out there who I am sure would be delighted to know that there is another story available for them to read, but the problem which we have is in letting them know. The book was rejected by a number of major publishers as being insufficiently "commercial" and I am very grateful to Troubador for taking it on for publication. However, they are a small independent publisher, and our promotional budget is zero. That is why I am very much hoping that you might be persuaded to give it a mention …!

Hello again Tom,
Thanks for your reply regarding John Aubrey.Funnily enough I also treasure the recording made by Roy Dotrice of 'Brief Lives. What a wonderful LP cover it is too. Although I didn't see the Dotrice show,it was revived a few years ago with Michael Williams as John. My wife and I saw it at The Oxford Playhouse and of course I still have the programme for that. It was a fantastic evening which we will always remember with great pleasure.
I see that you also give E.F.Benson as one of your favorite authors ,me too. What a clever chap being able to write both the Mapp & Lucia humourous stories and the really horrible (in the best sense of the word) ghost and horror short stories too.
Classical music is another interest that we seem to share. Have you come across last.fm yet. It takes some time but it does build into quite an acceptable site.Not of course anything like so good as this one of course.
Anyway hope to hear from you again soon.

Some of us are trying to get the "Peter Simple" books by Peter Simple/Michael Wharton properly combined. You are probably the person on LT with the most of these books, so if you are interested, you would be a good person to contribute to this effort. According to the Wikipaedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Wha... there are eleven collections of Peter Simple and we have got the list down to ten, so probably we are finished (and nobody has cataloged the one Wikipaedia calls "Way of the World (1) (1957)). I would appreciate it if you look at the combinations we've made and let us know if something looks wrong by posting a message to the thread I started in the Combiners! group, http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph...
