This really has nothing to do with books but I just read your post about your Grandmother being from Kentucky. I don't have any idea about how familiar with Kentucky you are but I was born in Scottsville KY where my father was from and I also lived in nearby Bowling Green(both in Southwestern KY) where my mother was from. For a time we lived in Irvine and Wilmore(near Lexington) while my father was in seminary. We moved to Illinois when I was 12 in 1965. On another note, my youngest daughter has lived in Austin for the past year. Small world!

Thanks for the tip about the Advocates Library -- very useful, I wasn't aware of that. My first tests suggest that cross-checking there can sort out a large proportion of the problems caused by inconsistent spellings in Cochrane.

That's the trouble with coming into this sort of thing as a complete amateur -- you learn useful things when you're halfway through the job!

I've taken the liberty of copying your comment to the Wiki page to ensure it doesn't get lost.

Thank you so much for the heads up on the typo on my entry for The Deptford Trilogy. I corrected it. I started manually entering everything because I noticed that the imports from Amazon weren't quite right sometimes. However, I should have caught this error before saving it. I wonder how many others I have? Maybe I can just check through everything in 2009 and start entering all of my old books in earnest. :)

I do like the Gawain book. My daughter told me about it and recommended it to me. I don't really think that there is too much white on the page. I don't mind that the original verse is not also included, although I think that could have been nice. I am not as knowledgable as the other people in the Folio Society Devotees Group, so you will have to take my recommendation with a grain of salt. :)

Thanks for your quick reply! I will admit that this combining/separating/whatever is confusing as hell sometimes. I know that LoA can cause problems, especially when I want to review one novel from a volume that contains three. I suspect what I will do is leave the whole thing alone.

Sorry to be so late in responding. Looks like others have already replied on this matter, but I have the 1991 edition, An Exaltation of Larks: The Ultimate Edition, with ISBN 0670300446. Hope that helps.

I've also heard good things about London from others, so that will probably be the next novel I read by Rutherfurd.

I used to work in a bookstore, and I was shelving books one day and came across Sarum. Like you, the subject intrigued me. I thought it was a unique idea to tell the history of an area over thousands of years, following the lives and descendents of several families. I would read Sarum while working the cash register -- they really don't like for employees to do that by the way, at least not at the store where I worked. I ended up buying the book and finishing it at home.

So that was my introduction to Rutherfurd, a gifted author and storyteller and historian who, in my opinion, gets little recognition.

Always nice to find other fans of Edward Rutherfurd. I haven't run across too many people in passing who have heard of him. I've read Sarum and The Forest. I enjoyed Sarum the most, especially the first half of it. Which novels of his do you like best?

Os - Thanks for the editing tip on Boswell's London Journal. I'll make the change. By the way, I just returned from my first trip to Scotland, which caused me to pick up the unread Boswell's Tour to the Hebrides in my library. It seems a fresh as when it was written (in 1773) !

Thanks for pointing out the mistake on my Boswell's London Journal entry, as well. I will make the correction. I try to import Library of Congress records when possible, but apparently got this one from Amazon and loaded it without changing it. It's actually rather embarrassing since I am a librarian (but, not a cataloger, obviously). I wish I could spend more time cataloging my collection on LT; I've only managed to get a fraction of my library cataloged so far.

thanks for the comment on Exaltation of Larks -- I corrected the Ultimate Edition's ISBN in my catalog, since it was something different. But then I noticed that the covers were switched - the Ultimate Edition had the cover for the Venereal Game, and vice versa. Haven't found my paperback one yet, but the Ultimate edition hardcover ISBN is 0670300446; the ISBN originally assigned to it was 0140170960. Don't know why the mix-up.

Os, I have 2 versions of An Exaltation of Larks.

Earlier version (on t.p.) : "An Exaltation of Larks or, The Venereal Game" by James Lipton. Expanded second edition with over 100 new entries. Grossman Publishers. (On t.p. verso) c1968, 1977. Twelfth printing October 1977. 137 pages. ISBN: 0-670-30044-6

Later version (on t.p.) : "An Exaltation of Larks -The Ultimate Edition" James Lipton. Viking. (On t.p. verso) c1968, 1977, 1991. 324 pages. ISBN printed in the CIP data: 0-670-30044-6. (This ISBN is also printed on the book jacket.)
Looks like the ISBN was recycled since Grossman is a division of Viking Penguin. I hope this answers your question.

Hi, I checked my copy of An Exaltation of Larks: The Ultimate Edition and its ISBN is definitely 0670300446. And it's definitely the ultimate, expanded edition. I had the earlier one also, but discarded it when the expanded edition came out. So the ISBN of 0670300446 is correct for the Ultimate Edition. Hope that helps.

The Library of America is strictly a publisher's series that only covers certain editions of works, not the work in totality. For example, not all copies of Walden are part of the Library of America. Because of this, it does not fit the definition of series as LibraryThing has organized it.

Mornin', Os. Changed the cover. But I also have the 1977 edition of "An Exaltation of Larks..." that I think is not expanded or "Ultimate," but I don't find a cover for that. Wish I knew how to set up "currently reading" and "just finished" lists on my profile page! Any advice? ~ Joyce

Hi, I see that you are a member of the Easton Press Collectors group as well as the Folio Society devotees group. I have been a member of the Folio Society for 6 years and enjoy their books very much. In the past when I received catalogs and mailing from Easton press I looked at them and then tossed them into the recycling bin. I have not found the EP cover to be that interesting or eye-catching, especially when compared to the FS books. I also am put off by generally higher cost of the EP books compared to the FS books. I just received the Easton Press Winter 2008 catalog a few days ago and I am interested in a few of the sets they are offering. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on Easton Press books in general and in comparison to Folio Society books. Thank you very much.

Os, I've notice that Sir Walter is one of your favorites, I wonder if you can help me. I'm still cataloging and just entered "Waverly Gems: a series of engraved illustrations of incidents and scenery in Scotts Novels". It is listed on amazon but has the published date of 1848, the one I have is dated 1852.
I've tried to search for a copy with the 1848 date with no luck. Do you know if there really is an 1848 copy?

Os, You could never be a pest. I changed the Tolstoy ,I always believed that Tolstoy should be spelled with a y instead of I. I remember reading many years ago that in reading translations of Tolstoy, avoid the translators that spell his name with a "I".

Maybe you could give me your advice: I'm intrigued by one book listed by the LT Recommendations machine, Rienzi by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. I've never heard of it, neither of the author, neither of Cola di Rienzo. (I only knew the Wagner's opera...) There are only 11 copies of it on LT, and I saw you had one. What do you think of it? Was it ever published by Folio? Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for your comments. Probably just another example of obsessive behavior, but I really got interested in hunting down author pictures. I'm trying to take a break from it for awhile, but I'll get back in at some point. I admire users like DromJohn who hunts down authors and gets permissions
