Sobre mimTo paraphrase Rudyard Kipling in "The Man Who Would Be King", I have been many things in my time; Pater Familias, land surveyor, explorer, archaeologist, anthropologist, author, poet, field scientist, Internet Professional, teacher, lecturer, assistant professor, and one summer, was actually a forest ranger in Oregon (loved that job).

Sobre a minha bibliotecaIt is a work in progress. As an undergraduate at the University of Oregon I studied Japanese Literature, and need to add a lot more books from that period of my life.

Just try to give him interests and attributes that you don't self-identify with. :)
Actually "Gary Stu" is not that well-known a term. I learned it from the Making Light blog, which I read because it's usually really interesting and funny, and the commenters are brilliant. It's run by Patrick and Teresa Nielson Hayden, who are publishers (they work for TOR). Lots of info about publishing and stuff, though mostly in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Teresa's "slushpile" post is legendary and full of good info for would-be authors. You need down time though if you want to read it - everybody is very verbose and you can get pretty addicted to it (I read it a lot when unemployed).
Eric, thanks so much for the book, it just arrived yesterday. I'm looking forward to reading it. In fact I started it just to take a break from Ulysses which I am currently trying like heck to finish. So far so interesting!
Eric, Thank you so much for your email. I'm glad you liked the review and thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read the book. Seeing the UO referenced in the book was a treat. You would love Eugene today, a rare spring 75 degrees. I'm so glad there will be a sequel. I'm looking forward to it. Jan
Hey E.C., just wanted to drop you a note to say thanks for the book. I'm looking forward to reading it. Coincidentally, one of the blurbs on the back came from a professor at my alma mater (Old Dominion). Anyway, thanks again!
Just wanted to drop by and say thanks for marking us an interesting library! We do our best. :)

The Poet's Testament

I give back to the earth what the earth gave,
All to the furrow, none to the grave,
The candle's out, the spirit's vigil spent;
Sight may not follow where the vision went.

I leave you but the sound of many a word
In mocking echoes haply overheard,
I sang to heaven. My exile made me free,
from world to world, from all worlds carried me.

Spared by the furies, for the Fates were kind,
I paced the pillared cloisters of the mind;
All times my present, everywhere my place,
Nor fear, nor hope, nor envy saw my face.

Blow what winds would, the ancient truth was mine,
And friendship mellowed in the flush of wine,
And heavenly laughter, shaking from its wings
Atoms of light and tears for mortal things.

To trembling harmonies of field and cloud,
Of flesh and spirit was my worship vowed.
Let form, let music, let all quickening air
Fulfill in beauty my imperfect prayer.

-- George Santayana
You're too kind! I am really looking forward to reading it.
Eric,
How did you run across my book, The Road From La Cueva? In any case, I'm glad it's in your library. Please let me know what you thought of it, if you wouldn't mind.
