Sorry for the delay in my response. It was a long, fun weekend, and I was out of the LT debate for a few days. :)

Here's my take. I loved what you had to say privately but feel that comment would have been great either in review comments or on a talk thread starting from a work page.

What can happen is, if a comment provokes further discussion, it can be moved to a work thread. If it is merely a short comment, it would appropriately stay on the review page as an attached comment. (MHO, you know!).

Saw your comment about reviewing a book that's in PDF. It hadn't occurred to me to even wonder whether to put my growing PDF library on LT. Worth thinking about, especially as Google Books unearths all kinds of old texts from exclusive academic libraries — some of which I keep deciding I have to have in my library.

Thank you, I did not know that Broos Campbell was an LT author. I have read one of his books and enjoyed it and hope to get to others soon. I have been reading mostly SF and Military History lately except for the Alan Lewrie books so I am quite behind on the Age of Fighting Sail genre.

Re: your comment on the current hot discussion in SFF. For me, The Hobbit and LOTR have VERY different feels to them. I read LOTR in August of 1967--a friend who had been in Chicago for the summer brought the first paperback edition in this country back to central Kansas with her. Otherwise it would have been several more years--the nearest bookstore was 25 miles away. I read The Hobbit a year or two later. If I had started with the Hobbit, I might have gotten around to LOTR eventually. But starting with LOTR, as soon as I got to a university town with bookstores, I was reading everything I could find by Tolkien. So not sure of The Hobbit as a sufficient lead-in to LOTR.

Ah, I've recommended "Locke Lamora" to a few people as well already; I enjoyed it a little more than "Red Seas, Red Skies", but thought both were fresh and original entries in fantasy, and I look forward to the third. I see you've also been reading Brent Weeks' "Night Angel" trilogy recently, and those were some of my favorite reads of last year. I finally picked up "The Name of the Wind" for my TBR pile on the recommendation of several people and am looking forward to that!

As for "Mary Bennet", I'd agree that it's not worth the bother and am glad I got it from the library. It tries far too hard to satirize Austen, and far more damning in my opinion, it's just not a particularly well-written book, period.

Posted this on the Historical Fic board regarding "The Independence of Miss Marry Bennet" but figured I'd also send it straight to you also.

"DW, I posted my review here, and I'd be interested in your thoughts. I don't object to continuation, re-imagining, or even tongue-in-cheek treatment of Austen, but I found "Mary Bennet" to be so determined to turn everything about "Pride and Prejudice" on its head that its plot is actually very melodramatically amusing, but its characters are cardboard and really, really suck. So as a satire, I really don't find it at all witty."

I just wanted to thank you for recommending The Lies of Locke Lamora. I'm very close to being done with it (only 50 pages or so left) and love it! I have purchased both the first and second book from Amazon, but I fear I'll be finished with the copy from the library before they get here.

I haven't read it yet. It was recommended to me over in Fantasy Fans. Now, however, I'm very interested in it and will be checking it out from my library today.

Usually I read about 75 books or so a year. I'm an upperclassmen at my university and that takes up most of my time, but I still manage to squeeze in a healthy number of books :P

It's horribly sad what happened to your friend, getting fired after he'd done all the cataloguing. It's also sad that every thing's going online. I always dreamed of owning one of those small, corner bookshops where, even if people didn't want a book, they still stopped in to chat. Online is convenient, true, and I won't argue that the number of titles are infinitely more than in any given bookstore, but it's never going to be the same as talking face-to-face with people.

Maybe I'm odd for generation (aren't we supposed to be the ones who never look up from our cell phones because we're texting too much). Oh well...

Hello! I've been kind of monitoring the debate over on Science Fiction vs "Proper" Literature and when I noticed you had over 5000 books in your library, I couldn't resist!

For me, too, fantasy was what got me into reading, but lately I've been finding less and less fantasy that's original, so my tastes have been turning in the direction of science fiction (just got done reading The Dispossessed by Ursula K. LeGuin). I'm going to start the Foundation series by Asimov soon - I just have a few library books to get through first.

Any other suggestions?

I see that NicolasBazan also asked you to be his 'friend' now we got an e-mail from him pretty much advertising his new book, and informs us that since we like books on Latinos and New Orleans (news to us) we would be interested in it.

This just got me miffed. So I forwared the e-mail to LT today. Hoprefully they will take some action since LT is not to be used for solicitations.

Heehee! The patrol leader's book was one I found at a used book sale we had at our church Friday night. My boys were in Boy Scouts, however. The age of the book was what caught my eye - I just couldn't pass it up!

You've got quite a few books that are on my LIST (it's sufficiently huge to warrant the caps) of books to read - I like to see what other people think of the ones on the LIST. :-)

As for the water books, I'm working on my Gold Award (on water conservation) and am reading these for research. So far I've only finished Blue Covenant, which is mostly about privatization (and why it's a problem) rather than conservation, but Water Consciousness is looking pretty good so far. Blue Covenant is pretty interesting if you're interested in the subject, though.

Yep, still have the house in Manhattan Beach. Ian is now on his list semester of college, for a Bachelors Degree in a double major - finance and Real Estate. I notice that the market for such graduates might be a bit thin at the moment, though when he started, it seemed like a good choice. *sigh*

I remember owning Wandor's Ride at some point - did I lend it to you? If so, you are welcome to keep it -- I don't know if I have read it, but am unlikely to at this point.

David - the age of the people in the Green Dragon, anyway, is quite all over the map! So you aren't alone, or isolated, by showing the wisdom of a bit of gray.

No reason to flinch from a serious discussion - if folks don't like the thread, or are bored by it, they can give it the red x - though if signs of discontent arise from the drift, we could always start a new thread to handle the subject. Some of the threads do get involved.

Or we could discuss anything privately, or start a new group with a specific aim...LT has a lot of venues to pursue interests with books! I'd enjoy more in depth discussion of fantasy works, and any sort of story in general, that being a lifelong passion. Just comparing reads would be delightful, I am always looking for new stuff to read. It can be a bit of a chore, winnowing through the mass - are you familiar with a site called fantasyliterature.net? It's a specialist site for fantasy, quite nicely organized, with multiple reviewers, and a transparent system of tracking their ratings that lets you assimilate if you share each reviewer's particular individual taste, or not, at a glance.

There is a forum, there, too, that welcomes indepth discussion, with intelligent, informed threads....LT has a lot of brainy people, many thought provoking opinions, something I appreciate mightily.

Kaye and Godwin did a significant collaborative series, quite a bit back, very unusual in make up - I will try to dig up the titles if I can.

Wow - how very cool - we share 12 books, which is a very large overlap of writers I enjoy a lot, - considering I only posted a fraction of my library - and only my favorites.

I see also that you included in your recent list a title by Parke Godwin - an author I have lost touch with for a very long while. Didn't he collaborate with Marvyn Kaye - I have fond recollections of that series.

Now you've done it - I am going to have to look for another cool book.

I hope you don't mind me lurking but ever since I recently noticed your collection showing up on my listing, I've been tiding up those books of yours which showed you as the sole LT-owner but for which I was sure there were other owners. You have about thirty or so additional books with member matches. LT is a boon for a slight case of OCB.
