Hi, Jill,

Thanks for the advice on the book. It sounds very interesting indeed. I'll look it up. In the meantime, I'll be curious to hear your reactions to "The Last Witch." It was a long time in the making.

Best,
Tom Robisheaux
Hi Jill.

I'm listed under Risa15. We have a large number of books in common

Rema
The Crow Eaters sounds terrific! Thanks for the tip.

Hannah
Wow you write compelling reviews. I'm adding "the Somnambulist", "When We Were Romans", "Gardens of Water", and "The Tenderness of Wolves" to my to-read list at Goodreads. Love that you give a sense of voice, but don't give away plot. Thanks!

All best,

Hannah
SWEETSMOKE by David Fuller sounds really good--especially as he says he was inspired in his treatment of the story by Raise High the Red Lantern, which is an incredible film and a favorite of mine. Thanks Xmaystarx for letting me know about it.

I've visited Shirley Plantation down near Williamsburg and found the whole experience kind of shocking on several levels. so I'd love to read a really good book set there, which is what SWEETSMOKE sounds like it is.

part investigative procedural, part narrative of American slave life. Cassius, a secretly literate slave on a Civil War-era Virginia tobacco plantation, is determined to track down whoever killed his mentor and surrogate mother, Emoline Justice, a free black woman.

It's newly out; here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Swe...vid-Fuller/d...
Thr New Yorker recently reviewed America America. . . I was surprised at length of their review. . . they were critical (and, I think, fair). I had tried to be subtle. . . not sure if I managed! (Incidentally I am very disappointed with the Chabons. My husband bought 3 and I am amazed that he is praised so highly.)
Hi, Jill.

I agree that we most likely should get to know each other better! Major bookish woo woo mojo is going on...

all the best from Ann the Overbooked
I see you got a copy of Gardens of Water. Would you be willing to send it my way when you are finished with it? I would be happy to send a couple of books off my paperbackswap bookshelf in exchange. Please let me know either way. Thanks.
